MELANIN NAIL FLEX

Date
Aug, 01, 2020

Have you ever come across a person so kind and passionate about what they do that you want to support them? This was my experience when I met Rayna from MyMy’s Beauty.

I’m scrolling down my timeline on Instagram and I see a post from Spiritual Word regarding a young lady who reached out to Teyana Taylor asking her to purchase her custom press-on nails in which the designs were inspired by the singer. I’m sure you know the rest of the story. Sis shot her shot and banked it. Teyana responded, and naturally when anything goes viral from a celebrity online, the crowd follows. The woman ended up selling out all of her nails.

Now, is this the young lady I supported? No, although, I’m not saying I wouldn’t have. I’m the type of person that’s always rooting for the underdog in hopes to uplift someone’s spirits. *cues Issa Rae* “I’m rooting for everybody Black.” I, in no way, have the influence of Teyana Taylor but the other Sis had already lived her dream when Teyana responded, so why not pour that blessed anointing onto someone else who didn’t expect it?

The moment for me occurred as I scrolled through the comments. People were saying how Sis sold out the nails but they were bummed out because they wanted to support her Black-owned business by buying some too. In my head I’m thinking “but that doesn’t mean you can’t support someone else.” There are plenty of people who are shooting that shot every day but missing in hopes that someone catches that rebound. (You can tell I’m from the Chicago– Jordan era. *sticks tongue out*) That’s when I noticed the owner of MyMy’s Beauty, Rayna, responding to people letting them know they can still support her small Black business.

Seeing that hit me in a compassionate way for some reason as if I could hear the lonely cry in her voice although that wasn’t the case. And I definitely don’t shop out of pity. I decided to look at her page unbeknownst to her seeing if she had anything that caught my eye. Whole time, all her nail sets were way better than the girl who had sold out in my opinion! I felt like I hit the jackpot. She became my blessing at that moment because I found too many sets I wanted to try. It never occurred to me to purchase press-on nails from a small independent shop instead of larger brands like Claire’s. I got even more excited when I found out that I could order custom sizes to fit my fingers and that they were reusable. Whaaaaat?! Shut yo’ mouth!

I, intentionally, responded to Spiritual Word’s post stating I would support her for all the followers that needed someone to follow in good footsteps. Immediately, Rayna sent me a direct message stating if there was anything I needed help with to let her know. Well, I did. It was my first time ordering custom press-on nails. I didn’t even know how to measure my nails but she had a video to teach me. As many questions as I asked, she never once gave me the impression that she was tired of me. And Sis had every answer ready. Not just a verbal answer either. She shared pictures with me that helped me understand what I was ordering such as the different nail shapes I could choose.

SHIPPING

Chile, I was almost overwhelmed by the options but because she made it so convenient for me, I had no problem choosing what I thought would look nice. Everything was taken care of up all the way up to the tracking to ensure that I received my package. Shipping was fast or it seemed, especially to have been free (over $50). It took a few days to get my nails but I’d say to give it up to 5-7 days to be fair if she doesn’t have a lot of orders.

When I opened the box, I was amazed by the cute packaging. You know a girl loves her packages but to get things packaged well makes her feel extra special. I’m struggling with tossing my box in the garbage. I may wait ’til I buy more nails. Don’t judge me.

Pictured on the top row is my favorite press-on nail set and it so happened to be called Melanin. If you know me, you know I love all melanated people, places, things, ideas, and theories. I also received a free small gift. I cannot lie, Rayna was on it. And because she was on it, I’d gladly spend my coins with her again. I tried to spread the news to as many people as I could. I hope it worked out for her. I know at least one person who I convinced to support. I’m happy that I could help in that regard.

Many Black people are known to not have it all together when it comes to business, especially in the customer service area. I was beyond pleased that was not my experience with MyMy’s Beauty. If it had been, you wouldn’t hear about it on here because this is to spotlight beautiful Black people with amazing talents, not to further tear down the broken ones who need a little more finesse.

Speaking of finesse…

2 Suggestions when purchasing MyMy’s press-on nails

1) Purchase your own glue.

I typically use my own glue anyway, but I ordered four sets of nails and received one small container of glue that you see pictured. I’m uncertain if I would have had an adequate amount for all four sets but I also didn’t use the glue to say for sure. I’m speculating. However, like I said, this was minor and definitely would not keep me from purchasing through her business again.

2) When I measured my nails, I measured from edge to edge.

And they literally fit from edge to edge but for my personal preference, I think I would take one millimeter off the final count and see how that works. I did get glue attached to my skin at one point because they fit precisely. To Rayna’s defense, she has a sizing kit for nails that you can purchase for $3 prior to purchasing your nail options. I’m not sure how shipping works on that. I was too thirsty to order and took my chances of measuring my nails myself.

Overall Rating

Five Stars! I am sa-tis-fied! I’ve worn one pair which were the LĂmon nails. I’ve received so many compliments. The color is hot, especially for the summer too!

Have you done your quarantine nail check on social media yet? I am proud to say that I can and it was because of a black-owned business. Cheers to MyMy’s Beauty!
