*cues “Glory” by Common (my Chitown brotha) & John Legend*
Have you ever celebrated a special occasion with a Black crew whether it was graduation, a wedding, or hell, even a divorce? The joy and laughter we bring when we celebrate our accomplishments with our family, our girls, and our homeboys should be one that we all experience at some point in our lives– maybe not for a divorce, though (awkward face). We work HARD! And when we reach that pivotal point of “Momma, I made it!,” it’s only fitting that we toast it up and take a sip to celebrate the lemonade of our labor.
Your Black lemonade can be spiked lemonade, a wine, or champagne of your choice. Just know that only our lemonade sparkles, Honey! But don’t get it twisted, it’s not only about the flavor. The essence is in the uplifting of our Black community. When we toast to our accomplishments, we are highlighting a major moment in our lives and within the Culture.
I’m so proud of us!
That’s what this blog is to me and how I want you to feel reading it. Proud. If only for a few minutes, let us feel the freedom, share in our sense of humor, and glory in the stories of the feats of our culture which is what has made us who we are today. We’re going to be someone’s ancestors at some point.
And for that reason, now is the time to join me in a toast to the Culture for taking our lemons and creating lemonade.
Raise your “lemonade-filled” champagne flutes up high and say with me…
